Is Phentermine Dangerous?

Phentermine is an extensively studied weight-loss medication that has few minor side effects. It works by suppressing the patient’s appetite.

Common side effects of phentermine include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Dry mouth
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Constipation

Some people that have uncontrolled heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, an uncontrolled overactive thyroid gland or uncontrolled glaucoma will need to get their medical condition under control before starting phentermine.

However, our weight loss program will provide you with a physical before you start phentermine. If you have an uncontrolled condition that needs to be addressed before you start phentermine you will be informed of it, and if you want, we can treat it at Health Circle since we are also a primary care physician’s office.

Phentermine is classified as a Schedule IV drug by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Schedule IV drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence.

Is Phentermine Banned?

No. Phentermine is 100% legal when prescribed by a licensed medical doctor.

Fen-phen was banned due to the risks of fenfluramine (fen), but phentermine (phen) was never banned. It is a safe and effective weight-loss medication.

Obesity Is More Dangerous Than Phentermine

Ultimately, the risks of being overweight or obese far outweigh the risks of phentermine. Obesity increases the chance of having the following conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes, type II
  • Some cancers
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Gallstones
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • Sleep apnea
  • Asthma
